Texas High School Football

An East Texas high school football team has a dynasty going. They’ve now won 6 state championships in the last 10 years. I followed them this season, not for the team, but for the entertainment of the local radio broadcasters!

State football championship games are all played at AT&T Stadium, where the Dallas Cowboys play, just before Christmas weekend. Local radio stations from across Texas come to broadcast their local teams on live radio, and now with the internet, the broadcasts are streamed on line.

I heard most of the game live as the radio announcers called the state championship game in their deep East Texas vernacular!

To help hear the accent, imagine yourself listening to someone who has two wadded up, dry paper towels stuck inside each cheek when they speak. Then, slooooooow doooown theiiiir woooords a taaad. That’s how it sounds. So there’s the accent explanation, but here are some direct quotes of the broadcasters during the game with spelling the way it was said…or at least the way I heard it. Here goes:

1st Quarter

  • Aww man! Dat’d been uh touchdowwwn if he’d throwed dat right!
  • Time to see what we’re made of!

2nd Quarter

  • Da dee-fence is hangin’ in dere, y’all!
  • Dair quarterback thrrrew dat bawl, an it wuz a prayer! It wuz just uh prrayer!
  • They cain’t cuver us! Day had two people cuverin’ us!  Dat’s double cuvered, and he cawt it anyway!
  • Dat number seven hit late!! DHEY DIDN’T CAWL DAT!!
  • Lookie dhere! Planted hiz helmet right in hiiz chest on dat tackle. I tell ya, dhey ain’t been hit like this ‘fore!
  • Boiy!  If he gets warmed up, we’re in gooood shape!

3rd Quarter

  • Dat Gunner iz playin’ hiz tail off!  SON!!
  • OKay. Looks like we cawled a time out. NOPE!!  It’s illegal proceeduuure on us!
  • (Ahead by 28 points) Dhere’s noo reeeason ta let up. Keep da gas goin’!!
  • We ran dat play twice to da right. Now we ran it to da left. Until dhey learn to stop it, we’ll keep runnin’ it.

4th Quarter

  • Dis may be da best teeeam we ever had!
  • Howww many times we won da state champunship? Six? Five, ya say? So this un‘ll be five, or six times we won it? Six? Okay, six times fooolks!

That’s how high school football games around here are broadcast! And regardless of your school size or class, if your town wins the state championship in Texas, it’s a big, beat your chest to show dominance, deal!

The band plays the school fight song over and over. Kids run up and down the field. Women scream even louder at the referees running by.  And men, well there’s only three times when it is socially acceptable for an East Texas man to cry, and after winning State is one of them! (John Wayne movies and the end Old Yeller’ are the other two.)

So if you are down here, up here or around these parts any time of the year, ask any local yocal about their high school football team. They’ll tell you!

If you just happen to be here on a Friday night from the end of August until just before Christmas? Stop by a local stadium and experience madness, madness in its purest form, over pudgy, pimple faced, high school boys dressed up like gladiators chasing a pigskin around a field.  And if you join in and holler, it’s a sure bet after the game someone’s going to welcome you straight in the eye and say, “Y’all come on back now, ya hear?”

That’s just the way Texas high school football is!

  1. Loved it! My husband is from Kansas and said, “The first two years of knowing you, I never understood a word you said./That Texas twang and all the letters you leave off, all I could do was shake my head like I knew what you were saying.”

    When I asked him what he meant he said, “There is no such thing with you as an “ING,” everything ends in an “IN”./ Born or born, you have totally lost the “ar.” He said, “You do not have a finger you have a fanger.
    And the list went on and on.

    But my reply was to him, “Do not forget you are a refugee in Texas, I was born and raised here./So it is not I who does not know how to talk it is you!/Learn the language or get out!”. 🙂

    I guess we do sound funny to others, but that is fine with me. As I told my husband when we married, “Make sure you want to live here the rest of your life, bc I am never moving from Texas, especially to Kansas!” Too cold up there.

    1. True, true! I love to travel, but being, (oh, sorry), bein’ from Texas, it always feels good to simply be back home in the state. But your husband is right about the twang! My favorite is fark for fork! It’s funny, and I’m from here! Lol Peace to you!

  4. Enjoyed the story. I never thought of myself as having an accent until i traveled up north. but honestly have you ever listened to someone from Massachusetts talk. It’s not me that has the accent. it’s them. Just sayen!

                  1. That’s why I like talking to you Jeff. You’re like my big brother/ Father figure full of wisdom even though I’ve never met you. California is way too progressive and believe in a lot of things I don’t agree with. I’m closer to the mindset of the south lol.
