Everybody Wins

It’s our large family tradition. Easter egg hunts for the children AND adults.

The kids go first, eggs with candy, bubbles, little toys, and more candy.

Then the adults hunt. We had 13 adults hunt this year because 5 of our adult gang couldn’t make it.  Janet and I sat back and enjoyed watching the 13 go after it.

Fun, fun!

It’s basically the same each year, but with new twists thrown in.  The twist this year was games made up of random teams.

The first-place team in points from the Egg Toss, Egg Spoon Race and Rabbit Race (tow sack races) got a first-place head start hunting eggs, followed by the second-place team, then the lowly third-place team.

One hundred plastic eggs were spread out over our front yard, most of which we’ve intentionally not mowed this Spring.  Give or take, that’s 2 to 2 1/2 acres.

Forty-eight eggs had $1, $2 or $5 bills on up to $20.  The other 52 eggs had numbers inside.  Afterwards, #1 chose first from the table gifts all the way through #52.

Table gifts always vary, but this year included seventeen $10 gift cards, tools, dishes, food, personal items, decor, anything really.

IMG_8509We had lunch following the sweetest prayer from a daughter-in-law.  All 21 of us dove into almost ten pounds of roast, (which was almost completely gone at the end), carrots, potatoes, onions, asparagus, a casserole, rolls, a bunny Italian cream cake and two pies! 

There were very few leftovers, which was perfect!!

It was fun!  It’s fun to watch your family compete against each other, laugh, pick at and tease one another.

It’s fun to see some serious conversations going on, and grace being extended in other chats.  It’s fun to see your family relax, play and content just to be with one another.

I think it’s my favorite thing as a grandparent, and parent of adult children.

In a large family, someone’s always doing well, yet someone’s always struggling too.  That’s OK.  Life is full of ups and downs, for everyone.

This Easter though, there were far more ups than downs in the lives of our family, and for that, I am very thankful.

Very.  

You never know what next year may look like.  I do, however, know what it looks like in the end, and for eternity after that.

That’s a settling thing, a sure foundation.  Life can be lived and enjoyed like that.

Not knowing what the future holds is much easier when you know Who holds the future.  Each day is its own Easter egg with something special to break open and enjoy.

Everyone wins. Some just win bigger.

  2. What a wonderful tradition! It sounds like everyone had a wonderful time, and you’re all so blessed to have one another. I love what you said about not knowing what next year brings, but knowing Who holds the future. Blessings to you and your family!
